If I wired an ammeter backwards, reversing the load side, would the meter simply read backwards or would it fail to work?

If this is the typical ammeter that shows both positive and negative current, driven from a shunt in the circuit, wiring it backwards should just reverse the reading.

Vans: of it's wired backwards it's ruined

Answered my own question. Apparently some ammeter gauges will read reverse if wired backwards.

However, I have a Vans gauge and the installation institutions clearly say that if it's wired backwards, it's ruined.

For those doing this for the first time don't make the same mistake I did. The "load" side pig the gauge is the wire from the alternator.

And, yes, another reminder to carefully read install instructions...
