Would like some suggestions for a brand and model of auto alternator to install on my RV9A Lycoming O-320 B1A. I think 60 amps is fine. Thanks Gary

Danny has offered links for an alternator with a voltage limiter, and an external field switch option to shut it off in flight. I agree with Danny, but here are some other references if you want more.

The Autozone, etc alternators don't have either, but accordingly cost less.

For a panel cost of a nice upscale SUV, I chose the path with protection, YMMV.

Educational fun . . .

Oh - BTW - use google and type "site:vansairforce.com alternator +denso +autozone" and you will find much more.

Bluebrear,

If you PM me your email address I'll send you a document that I put together of some of the options. The document is primarily my notes that I made after doing a bunch of web browsing. It contains my opinions of the best solutions, so that those opinions as just that.

I'm not a alternator expert, but after my search I know a lot more. Use at your own risk, do not try this at home, and if you should fail in your operation the secretary will disavow all knowledge of this operation as they used to say.

I second B&C. Expensive yes. But you get what you pay for. I am never concerned about an alternator failure in my airplane. I am sure it has happened, but I have never heard of a B&C equipment failure.

B&C 40 amp alternator

B&C LR3C-14 Alternator Controller/Regulator, 14v

This is all you will need, and it will protect your expensive avionics from over voltage spikes.

^^^ This is an excellent suggestion. I've had B&C alternators on 3 homebuilts with over 4,600 hours of trouble free electrical systems. I've had two LR-2 and one LR-3 regulators, ditto on the service life. Great service from Bill too :)
