A while back I was playing around with routs to take to places I might like to fly to. One time I came across a airport in Louisiana or Arkansas where you could taxi right up to a hotel (Holliday Inn I think). Unfortunately I lost that flight plan. Anyone got an Idea what airport that might be? Anyone know of airports between So California and OSH that might have similar setups? Planning on leaving for OSH on the 21st and except for my first fuel stop at SJN and ending up at OSH Sat or Sun I have no plans. Trying to figure out what to do and where to go. I am off from the 20th to Aug 5th. More time than money or sence. I just want to fly someplace and see somethig interesting have some fun and spend as little money as I can and I figure not renting a car would be a big money saver.

Welsh or Jennings.

The airport that you can taxi to a hotel is either welsh 6R1 or Jennings 3R7. In louisianna. It sits along I 10 just south of the interstate. I've never landed there, but driven past many times.

Jennings is the one in Louisiana - Welsh has a great Cajun restaurant about a two-block walk, but no hotel. Jennings has a taxiway over to hotels.

In Texas, consider Fredericksburg - the Hangar Hotel!

Sedona

Sedona, Arizona is out of your way, but the airport is beautiful as well as the town. There is a motel about one hundred yards from the airport....I think it is called Sky Ranch Motel. It has an overlook so you can relax and look down on Sedona from a lofty perch. It's not super fancy, but it is clean and comfortable.

I would also recommend the Hangar Hotel in Fredericksburg, Texas. It is really nice!!!!

Loosen your requirements. At Olive Branch airport in Memphis there is a close by (less than five minutes) hotel that has a shuttle van to pick up and drop off folks.

No rental car needed and places to eat within short walking distance.

Even that is probably not the norm unless you pick larger airports with towers and FBOs open late into the evening...close to larger cities.

That would be a good filter on places to stop if a website like Airnav could do it.

SN07

The Beaumont Hotel, Beaumont Kansas. After landing, taxi up Main St., pause at the stop sign to look both ways, and park in the grass next to the hotel. Saturday and Sunday mornings are like a fly-in with all the traffic coming and going.

One place that I have stopped at multiple times (although I have never stayed at their hotel) is Dixie Chopper Air at Putnam County Airport in Indiana. The FBO operates a restaurant and hotel all in the same building. I like stopping there when I'm up in the midwest because it's a good place to get stuck. I plan on stopping by there again on my way to OSH in a couple of weeks.

Yes, this FBO is operated by the same guy that owns the lawn mower company. The American Chopper crew actually built a motorcycle using one of their lawn mower engines. On one stop I made there several years ago the bike was on display in the lobby of the FBO.

Edit: Here's a very poor quality video of the show where they built the bike.

Flying Dining Sleeping

I too have landed at Beaumont in Kansas. A very unique and fun place, however, take off your wheel plants before landing. Last time I was there it was very rough.

Wife and I go to Branson, Mo at least once a year. If you land at the M. Graham Clark - Taney County Airport (KPLK) the Clarion Hotel will provide free shuttle to and from. You are in walking distance to most of the show theaters and also walking distance to the outlet malls which keeps the wife happy. Google "branson shows" - it's more than just "country".

If you are just looking for a place to sleep, take a look at Grand Glaize-Osage Beach Airport (K15) in Missouri. Land, tie down, walk across the street to the hotel, sleep. A fun strip to land on, heart of the Ozarks, big winding lake. Oh yes, good bar food about a 1/2 mile up the road.

You said SJN for gas, you might consider Santa Fe, NM (KSAF). Although a bit out of your way. Free shuttle to and from the Holiday Inn. Around back from the hotel is the Blue Corn restaurant and microbrewery. Great open face soft shell tacos. Friendliest people anywhere, but, pass on the gas. It's way expensive. Get the taco.

FWIW, I've found the sides to be smoother than the center. Also, the north seems better than the south, so land a little long to the north or stop quickly and taxi slow to the south. Definitely is rough though. With all that rocky foundation, don't need to worry much about it being soft from rain.

Oops

You are correct I should have had in there "or a short walk". My idea is to be close enough to the airport so I do not need a vehicle to get there. That way If I want to leave at O dark thirty I can get to my plane without the need for a ride or to drop off a rental.

Memphis you say. Never been there or to that state. You might have just given me a destination :)

:)

Out West, Lone Pine Airport in the Owens Valley (O26) has a Best Western less than a 200 yard walk from the FBO, and beautiful views of Mt. Whitney thrown in...:)

Art Evans is a friend of mine and all-around good guy. He lives on the airport next to the hotel and is able to live there since he is the designated "security guard".

Harris Ranch in Coalinga California has its own strip (3O8). Great hotel (resort, really) and FANTASTIC restaurant. Tie downs are steps away from the front desk.

Two thumbs up for the Harris Ranch Steaks mentioned above...

A bit further South Tehachapi (TSP) has hotels and resturants within a 10 minute walk from the airport.

RV hotel

Does no one take advantage of the 'RV Hotel' listings here on this site? I'm on it, as are several friends, & have never gotten a call or email to take me up on it. Most are either on an airpark or will pick you up & return you to your plane. And the price is right for lodging, too. :)

I guess because we cannot find it! Give us a link to it.

Sure. Click on the 'Home' blue hyperlink just below the VAF logo at the top of the page. Once on the home page, scroll down through the alphabetized list of hyperlinks (blue text) to the 'R's, & click on 'RV Hotel'. There are maps showing geographic locations of participants, and a text listing of names, locations by state/country, phone numbers, accommodations, conditions, etc. Enjoy!

Hotel/Casino

If you wanted to take a more northerly route to Oshkosh, you can land in Jackpot NV on the Idaho border and walk 2 minutes to a large hotel casino. I think that's where you pay for gas, so you have to walk there anyway.

airport hotels

Since Indiana is already a ways off course here are three more:
Flying W Airport Resort in Medford NJ, motel adjacent to FBO
River Ranch Airport and Resort in Central FL, hotel is listed as .6 miles from airport but I don't think its that far
Seligman AZ tiedown on the ramp and walk down a path to several motels and restaurants. Old route 66 motels but most are clean.

RV Hotel - had no idea

I had no idea that the "RV Hotel" existed. Cool! Can "adoptive" RV parents use it?

Yes, based on their name, the Road Kill Cafe is hard to pass up, but Westside Lilos across the street has better food.

Quite a list

Well this turned out to be quite a list
Jennings (3R7) - was the one I was looking for. No good for this OSH trip but might be a good one for a Keys trip.
Fredericksburg (T82) - always wanted to go there with my GF. Kind of out of the way for OSH but I got time so might check it out even though I am solo.
Sedona (SEZ) - been there and love it. If the morning WX stays bad into next week I might leave for there when the morning clouds clear on Wed and be ready for a O Dark Thirty start from there on Thursday.
Olive Branch Memphis - Cannot find that one. Memphis might be a place to check out on this trip. Not on the way but I should have plenty of time.
Beaumont (SN07) - Turf. Sounds like a nice place but not sure I ... never landed on Turf and not sure I want to to that "first" on this trip.
Albany - probably visit there but not this trip.
Putnman Co (4I7 - NOt exactly on the way but again might check it out this trip.
Branson (PLK) - Always wanted to check that place out. I LOVE COUNTRY music. Is there any other music? Kind of on the way might check it out this trip.
K15 - Kind of on the way. Might check it out.
Concord California - Not this trip but a future trip
Jackpot ()6U) - Not this trip but a future trip
UY25 - Not this trip but a future trip
Lon Pine (O26) - Not this trip but a future trip

Cool thanks for all the information. Any more suggestions :D
