Fuel pump current

I have not seen the rating but my ampmeter registers 2 to 3 amps when I turn it on.
Is that with a pressurized system, or just testing fuel flow? Sounds a bit low, but perhaps those pumps are more efficient than my Bosch pumps which pull about 6 amps when fully loaded.

With engine running on the ramp or in the air. Can't recall checking draw when preloading the system or priming with the engine off but I don't recall seeing that kind of a swing.

Checked my manual - AP says it draws 5 amps and it should be protected with a 7 to 10 amp breaker.

The size of the circuit breaker you select has everything to do with what wire size you are protecting and little to do with the intended load.
If the load (pump) fails or the wire chafes to ground, you want the circuit breaker to pop before the wire overheats and causes damage to other wires or other things the hot wire may be close to.
You must of course select a wire size that will support the expected current draw of the load.
18g wire and a 10 amp circuit breaker should be fine.
