I have seen a number air filters creased by a backfire in the intake during a hot start. It can be a little hard to tell which way the air filter was originally damaged. Are you sure it was sucked inward?

Do you have a picture of what the filter looks like? I'm a visual kinda guy. I've read here on VAF before that hot start backfiring may cause a similar issue.
