This article on Avweb explains that, starting in 2017, aircraft equipped with 1090ES transponders will be tracked by satellite, anywhere in the world.

Tracking capability using new technology (weather Spot, APRS, cell phone or similar technologies) was one of the arguments we used against forced adoption of 406 ELTs in Canada. Transport Canada (like a kinder, gentler, FAA) listened to our comments and modified the rule.

Now it looks like 1090ES will provide a huge benefit to SAR in determining the last known position of a missing aircraft. Yes, there are privacy issues at play here, but now it's clear that there is a significant benefit to SAR, pilots and families should an aircraft go down in a remote area.

Better yet, there is no additional cost for this service... if you are equipped for ADS-B Out with 1090ES, it comes for free. This is not true if you are using UAT, so keep it in mind when you are choosing an ADS-B implementation. Perhaps 1090ES for ADS-B out, combined with a UAT for ADS-B in would work... but only in the USA. No other country uses UAT.

Good reading,

It boggles my mind that a satelite 500 or more miles away can pick up a signal from a little antenna on the bottom of my airplane. Very cool.
