I'm guessing it was prop oil on his windshield and the hub cracked and separated??
 
I've been to HHI a few times, and have often thought of what a great beach it would be to land on, if not for all the people. At low tide, the beach is very wide with hard packed and smooth sand.

Very sad that someone died in what appears to be an otherwise perfect emergency landing. It will be interesting to find out whether the pilot was able to see the person/people or if the oil totally obscured his forward vision. In any case, it's a sad outcome.

I think a Lancair 4P (which is what the article calls it) is powered by a Continental IO 550 with twin turbos and the turbine version of the Lancair is called a Lancair propjet.
