We went to Blockbuster for our weekly Saturday night movie DVD and picked up "The Flying Scotsman". It is a true story about a bicycle racer that was a world champion in 1993 and 1995 and set the world record for distance in a one hour ride. It is not an American film and it is so understated and under dramatized that a lot of potential emotional connection is lost. Add to that the Scotish accents make it difficult to understand exactly what is said and the separation of viewer from emotional involvement is increased. However, this fellow made his own bicycle in his initial effort to break out of his low achievement life and go for the world one hour distance record. He was a troubled but deep thinking observer focused on speed. When he destroyed his wife's washing machine during her absence because he realized they had exceptional bearings that would improve the performance of his bicycle ... well I was involved. My wife did not enjoy the movie much.
