i made a call to garmin this morning to solve a problem with the 496 not acquiring satelites. they helped me do a soft reset by holding down the out button while starting up the unit. it worked fine. my software was 3.50 though they were up to 3.62 now. the later would of helped with this problem.

This procedure and another were discussed just this week in this thread. Notice that thread started with a discussion of replacing the internal battery instead of sending the unit to Garmin. The procedure you describe is, I believe, the one described by Rob Brooks on 7/22/08.
