The 396 is up to version 4.20. This apparently fixes the battery missing message and the non operation of the GPS with the old battery. I called Garmin and they sent me a new battery for free and told me to update to v.4.20 and then install the new battery. I guess there is software in the battery that talks to the GPS... (from what I could gather from the Garmin guy) Everything works as advertised now. If there is anybody in the Atlanta or GA that can meet me at LZU or ATL, I can update your GPS for you for free since the update is already in my laptop confuser.
