Good times (race times that is) were had by all. Even the Mustang stepped up. I love to look at these planes and speeds relative to the past and to each other both in and out of class bounds.

RV- reds?

I have tapered off from the racing and it will be disappointing to not have any 320 powered RV's racing. I am just curious why the 360 class has so many more competitors than the 320 class. Especially for the Texas races.

CM

Was the Jim Smith in RV red, the one with the special wingtips?

Chris, several of the O-320's RV's around here are not even painted(5yrs). They know their planes aren't the fastest and are just enjoying flying around. Class racing is a new concept in our area. We're working on getting them to come out in July.

wing tips

Race 110 RV-6 had sort of triangle tapered wing tips. He was my competition. I didn't get a chance to look it over or talk to him as I had to rush to get fuel and get to the briefing. I suspect he didn't run all out, I kept thinking he would catch me but he never did. I didn't configure my plane for the race, and I didn't take off the big screen door tailwheel springs, and chains as I normally do nor did I tape off some off the areas that I would if I had more time. I had my oil cooler duct blocked off too which I didn't have time to open up before the race so I didn't run full power. Oil temps weren't a problem though but I didn't start the race with full power so I didn't push it up once the oil temps stabilized. I focused on running a clean race and overall I didn't do too badly. I had trouble seeing some of the turn points until I was right on top of them including the finish line. Thats what makes it a challenge.

this is one of the things I have been trying to work out for the Big Sky Race. We set the course to be weather friendly, tucked into one valley or two. I set the turns to what i thought would be ok, only to find out when zooming along at 170kts & 500'agl they may be difficult to spot for someone not familiar to our local area. so we are tweeking the turn points....so much work trying to put one of these together, with zero experience.

My Race

First thing Bob & Jeanine Axom were missed. Best wishes for Jeanine.

Ok, to the race. I knew it would be tough with the RV8's that were lined
up in the field. They were fast looking at other races.
The wind did calm down a bit but the turbulence was unreal.
I tried to pick an altitude that wasn't pushing me through the canopy or
making me hold on to the gear legs. The G-Meter looked like a pingpong
ball.
Ran low to the first point and started climbing to the turn 2. First bad move.
Ended up at 4500 and then 5500 on the 3rd leg. This was all good for the last
2 legs as you will see in the numbers.
You can look at your numbers on the DataLogger but that is shoulda, coulda,
woulda stuff but it helps you in future races you hope.

Here are some of the times I was running:
Leg 1-----2000'-----197.29-----182.76
Leg 2-----4500'-----200.09-----186.80
Leg 3-----5500'-----194.30-----186.42 Killed me
Leg 4-----3500'-----223.42----214.12 decending Pauls Valley,Sulfer,Kingston
Leg 5-----600'------228.78-----214.43

Crossing finish line was at 228.78 mph.
Data Logger avg speed-----202.84
Race speed----------------201.58
Difference for 150 miles-------1.26

Ran the Taylor race at 202.06 and this race at 201.58 and the difference of
.48 mph so I am consistently 3rd or 4th. Ran the prop at 2600 this race with
the vents closed and it ran very smooth. No issues with the plane at all.

Overall it was another great race, great hosts and great time.

And as Chris said in the post above we are looking for YOU.
RV drivers. Come out and get your bragging rights. I am
still in the HUNT.

Some great races coming up in Galveston and Mesquite.

Is any of the rv blue racers on? What do you get Cruise wot true airspeed when at 7000 feet and what was your race speed?

I see here Russell Sherwood cleaned up in the Sprint Class again with his Subaru powered Glassair. Good show!

RV Grin,

Yeah I have one too.

My speeds at 7500 or 8500 are 210 mph. That is cruise or 75%.

Race speeds depends on the altitude and the MP you can
pull but I can see 210 to Redline. This is 100% power.

2700/30-30.5 Where I ran Taylor

2600/29-30 Where I ran Texoma

- Talked with the EZ driver 83 Dave and he ran a Catto prop and ran 2900. Wow. He ran 205.??

Enjoyed the Video and reports

Enjoyed the Video and reports. Sorry we couldn't make it.

Bruce, the night before the race when you can get the hourly winds aloft for the time of the race it is good the nail down the altitudes you plan to fly on each leg. A couple of hours of study and math trial runs REALLY make a difference. There will always be several miles per hour difference for the race depending on what altitudes are flown on each leg - ALWAYS! I put my spreadsheet for the Texoma race on the SARL Yahoo site. You can down load it and practice with in. The top section is where all of the entries are made, the middle section is where the Excel imbedded formulas do the intermediate calculations and the bottom section provides the results. For convention in the use of this sheet I use negative numbers for headwind relative winds and descents and for entering the wind angle you must enter the direction the wind is blowing to rather than from to produce the correct results. My plan for Texoma was go to the maximum 1,700 alt for the Sherman pass to the start line then descent at 500 fpm to 1.4 K ft. MSL to turn 1, climb at 500 fpm to 3K ft to turn 2, then descent to 1.4K ft to turn 3, then climb to 3,000 for the last two legs with the descent to the finish line at 1,000 ft MSL. With my cruise, climb and descend estimates the spreadsheet said I should get 219 mph for the race. Alas, my racing days are over at least for a while - other priorities.

Bob,

Thanks for the insight. The worst decision was after turn 2.
The winds were not light and variable but variable (VERY).
Still a good race and will put it together one of these days.

Best wishes for Jeanine.
