Did run a test panel on the firewall rig. This particular brand, on a carefully prepared panel, did pretty well in terms of insulation, but not as well as a reflector/insulator sandwich on the engine side. The wild card is how well the insulating char would stay in place given strong airflow and normal firewall vibration. My guess is not well at all, and when the char blows away, the insulating properties go with it.
