There is now available a kit for D180 planes to upgrade the wing wire connectors (see: Vans on Facebook). Since this adds more pin connections at the wings roots, it might be feasible to separate the Nav and Strobe functions on planes with the D180 panel.

Joe: Is there a pin in the avionics PCB D-sub to accept a wire if the new nav/strobe switch is installed in the switch board?

New Strobe Switch

Tony,
It will not be easy to replace the Nav/Strobe switch with one that could be either OFF or Strobe or Strobe & Nav. And it definitely would not be plug and play.
But there is a better way: Install a new Strobe switch in the empty space between the Autopilot and the Trim switches. The Control Board has been pre-wired so that a switch installed in that spare location connects to the Optional D-Sub pins 14 & 15. So yes, it can be done. Connect the strobe wire to pin 14 or 15 and put a fuse in the empty spare location. The original Nav/Strobe switch will now be used for Nav only.
