Go to the EAA web site and purchase the kit for registration. I also got on the EAA site and selected a recommended DAR. He did a great job and took no money for the job.

Exactly.

Also, make contact with the FSDO or DAR who will be doing the inspection, and see what they want to see-------at the actual inspection.

Default Registration

If sequestration takes effect the registration process is expected to slow WAY down.

If you are within 6 months of finishing you should get the registration now. You need to have it in hand when you have the A/W inspection. (and the N number has to be on the plane, and the fireproof dataplate).

Yup, I'm hoping I'm about 5 months out and with sequestration I'm starting the forms on Mon.

Default Warning ...

Many (if not most) of the EAA paperwork kits have outdated FAA forms. My DAR and local FSDO warned me that the FAA will not accept the paperwork unless it's on the most recent version of the various forms. You'll need to get online and check each form, and then print any newer ones to replace the ones in the kit.
The thing I did not understand when I got to my DAR inspection was - as stated above - the plane needs to be registered when he arrives. Turns out you can register your RV when it's a pile of parts in your garage. I always thought you couldn't/shouldn't register it until it was a flyable bird. Not so.

Default Problems registering early.

You can register the aircraft at anytime prior to certification.
However, registering early can have negative effects.
For one thing, some states will send you a tax dun as soon as the aircraft is registered.
Another problem I have encountered is that of the builder passing or selling the project before certification. This can be a real can of worms.
No one plans to sell their project, but it happens. I had to deal with one builder who registered the aircraft, then got Alzheimer and sold the project. The purchaser didn't transfer the registration before the original owner passed away. Clearing this up was not an easy task.

Thanks for the replies!
I'm in my mid 30's so I hope I don't die soon, but helps to live like there is no tommorrow ! I'm hoping to fly sometime this summer, trying to stay in front of the power curve. I've got the lead time on the prop and avionics, Tax wise I figure it'll be flying this year anyway so I might as well get the ball rolling. Last thing I want is a finished airplane waiting on paperwork after 8 1/2 years.
