Hind site 20/20, I wish I had a gap. It is a lot easier to build your panel un-mounted. If it is too tight it is difficult to install and easy to scrap paint off the underside of the glare shield/skin.
While you don't need as much gap as you have, I would file down the edge to make some gap all the way around and live with a little extra where you already have a bit too much.
Or, move on now and don't look back. You will not notice that gap after a while and nobody else will either.
