Any suggested stops on way to RV homecoming?

A bunch of us Canadian RV's are heading to the RV homecoming in Indepdence Oregon in a couple weeks. Due to weather, we are giving ourselves a couple extra days to fly that far. If we make good time, we may have a couple days to explore prior to the fly in.

Any suggested stops between Mullan Pass and Oregon?

During the fly in we are going to day trip to Tillamook, and when over, hit Orca Island WA, on way to Nanaimo BC on Vancouver Island before tracking back east. Trip of a lifetime.

Fun little stops, cool airports, incredible scenery...thats the kind of thing that would be a lot more fun than the standard big airport, hotel stay over.

We are looking more for the back country strips, the very cool or diff type airports etc. There are some wives going and more museums isnt as much fun as the scenery and experiences. Just figured there might be some good pireps on here.

Aug 18th is the Pappy Boyington Cup race in Coeur d Alene, ID. While that might not interest the spousal units, Coeur d alene is a favorite of my wifes.

We're going to the race, but also down to the lake to take in the Old Wooden boat show.

On the way back north, I highly recommend heading for the coast, and flying north and around the tip of the Olympic Peninsula on your way to Nanaimo. Stop in Hoquiam, WA for lunch and gas, there's a little restaurant on the field there that's excellent. There's nothing else at Hoquiam, but that won't matter because the flight up the coast and around the point will be a large part of that "trip of a lifetime." The scenery is spectacular.

Stop by Langley, BC on the way through if you have time... I think we have the largest RV contingent in the Lower Mainland region of BC.

We just spent 5 days in Hoquiam (driving, the plane is tied down in Olympia). For most of those days the scenery would have been IFR....

We did try out the cafe at Hoquiam (Bowerman Field) and it does get two thumbs up.

Again, not for the spousal units, but a short fly-in stop at Everett and a visit to the Museum of Flight restoration shop would be nice. They are at the end of taxiway K, and I'm sure a phone call could get permission to taxi there.

I hope you get the same nice weather we got for the last two days in Seattle.

There are some cool airstrips along the coast that are right on the beach or very near that can be fun. Pacific City (PFC) is right in town and a stones throw from the beach. Nehalem Bay State (3S7) is another neat strip on the coast that is essentially in a campground that has trails and not too far a walk to the beach.

Going east I'd recommend flying to Sunriver (S21). There is all sorts of stuff to do there (Resort Community). The Lodge has a decent restaurant, golf, miles and miles of bike paths and loaner bikes on the field, shopping, pool, ...

Keep going east to John Day for some spectacular scenery while flying. Hard to do much w/o a car there but they do have a courtesy car at the field and the town is just down the hill.

Flying over Crater Lake north of Klamath Falls is breathtaking too! If you've never been up to the lodge at Crater Lake it's a must if you find yourself in the area. No real easy airport all too close though. http://iflyoregon.com/tiki-index.php?page=Crater+Lake

Mt St Helens over flight!

I'm sure I can drum up some more if these don't appeal.

3S7 and PFC are narrow, short, tree shadowed and can have brutal rolling cross winds. Approach with great caution.

A couple places worth stopping are:

Rowenas/Sandpiper Golf Course- Harrison Mills BC. North of Chilliwack, BC. Good gravel strip- easy approach from the North just be aware of the power lines on the South end of the strip- very nice Golf Course Restaurant/Resort- lots of weddings here in the summer. Not on the charts so check it out on google earth. Check out the you tube video link.
