Default Question for the DAR's

I have been flying my unpainted RV-6A for two years now, and am thinking about painting it. My FAA required data plate is riveted on the airframe. Is it legal for me to remove the data plate so that I can paint under the plate? After paint, the plane would not be flown until the data plate is reattached.
Thanks.

Default Dataplate

Yes. You can remove it for painting.

Yes, as long as it is permanently re-attached before flying.

Thanks to all.

And yes, it will be permanently attached after paint.

Default Permanently Attached

Does that mean that one should use SS pop rivets in the SS data plate or will AL pop rivets suffice. Seems like AL will work fine since the underlying structure is AL. I've had a hard time finding any 3/32 or 1/8 SS pop rivets without buying a large amount.

Aluminum pulled rivets are fine. Just be sure that the data plate itself is not aluminum.
