Default GPS Antenna and Ground Planes

Can someone clarify, does a GPS antenna need to be installed with a Ground Plane? I didn't think it did, but a discussion with another builder got me thinking and I realized I wasn't 100% certain.

Specifically, we are talking about mounting the antennas on top of the RV10 Fiber Glass canopy.

Nope. you don't carry a piece of aluminum with your handheld do you? I have 2 of them velcroed to the roof inside my overhead console. Works good. Ran all my overhead cables through the support bar.

Default May depend on the device itself

Check out this aftermarket site and their comments on ground planes.
