Default How do you drill out a pop rivet?

I just discovered that Vans must have sourced its CS4-4 rivets from 2 different sources. One does not sit as flush as the other. I have 3 pop rivets on my emp fairings that sit proud because of this. (Yes I countersunk with a 120 degree bit and dimpled with the 120 degree dimple die). I would like to drill these out but how the heck do you drill a pop rivet?

Default Here is how I have done it.

Step one, use a small diameter pin punch to knock out the center mandril.

Step two, drill as normal, and if the rivet starts to spin on you, use a flat blade screwdriver or other tool to hold the head from spinning.

High speed, very low pressure so that the rivet doesn't start to spin.

another way. Use flush sidecutting pliers and snip them off from the back side - the heads will then fall out.

I just drill it out like a normal rivet. If it starts to spin hold it with a pair of pliers on the back. Once the head is drilled off pull the back off with the same pliers.

Check Avery Tools for a device to use when you cannot get to the rear of the rivit. Pricey but well worth it when you really need it.
