Garmin 430W to Transponder Encoder
According to the install manual, I will need to pick up the Encoder signal
for my 430W to function properly
I have an old encoder with multiple wires. I believe they refer to this as a Grey-serial encoder?
How do I grab these signals
Do i piggyback in on the encoder wires?
Should I make a small 'Y' cable to tap into the signal?
Also there is some question about placing some diodes
inline on these wires?
I have also read the 430W has these diodes internally
and this is not an issue?
any help or commentary is appreciated.

If you have a Garmin digital transponder you can just run a serial line from the transponder to the 430W. If you have an encoder which outputs serial you can use that, otherwise you're stuck with all the parallel wires. Either splice them or build yourself a small splitter cable - either will work fine.
Cheers,
Stein

Dumb question: What does the 430W do with the transponder info?
I have a hard time understanding how all these things interact with each other.

Ameri-king makes a gray code splitter cable, may save you some time constructing a harness.

Im assuming the grey code provides the 430W with encoded altitude info
for when one shoots approaches.?

If your EFIS is going to be connected to your 430W via ARINC, most likely it can get its altitude info directly over the ARINC connection.

No EFIS or any other fancy toys.
Just adding a Sl-30 and 430W with CDI's to my steam gages.
Replacing old ARC and Michel TKM gear.
