Default smoke in the cockpit

just approaching the western sierras when a certain little safety unit sitting on my glare shield began spewing smoke. very unsettling. mains off. pulled the unit down. hot as a pistol and plastic deformed. repaired at my expense (out of warranty). so, keep an eye on those little dash mounted devices...

So let me get this straight...

A device that was purchased to save your life almost caused an in-flight fire, you had it repaired AND you continue to fly with it?

XRX. Yep, that's a bit of irony isn't it!
I do like the unit but this was unsettling. I was a little perturbed to have had to pay for the repair given that it could conceivably have sunk me.
I will definitely be keeping a close eye on it hence forth.

This incidentally is the second smoking electrical equipment issue I've experienced. The first was a smoking Garmin 430 some years back.

probably worth taking a good hard look at what likely caused it, how it's powered, and how its power wires are protected
