Question Vans voltage regulator ?

I have the small firewall mounted V.R. and the 14184 alternator for Suzuki Samurai and am wondering how to make the connection between the two.
There is a red wire potruding from the bottom of the unit with a wire connector on it it looks to be about 16 or 18 ga wire is this wire that goes to the alt. ?

This whole alt. wiring circuit has got me somewhat in a quandry. I decided to add a ammeter at the last minute and am confused because the directions with the shuntless ammeter are very vague. But I think the ammeter is wired one side to the battery via master relay and the other side of the ammeter is connected to the bus bar downstream from the 35a fuse and alternator.
