Default Step Install

I'm in the process of installing my steps and the fit is pretty snug between the step and the mounting bracket. So much so that if I were to prime the exterior part of the step that goes through the mounting bracket or the inside of the bracket, there's no way the step will fit. I really don't want to remove any material from the step or the bracket, but I also don't want to leave it bare. What are my options for corrosion protection in this case?

Install it wet and touch up where any primer gets rubbed off going through.

Man, sometimes the simplest and most obvious solution is right there staring you square in the face. Thanks!
