Transponder Doesn't Work?

My transponder apparently doesn't work. The panel light sometimes comes on and stays on, and other times will light up on power up, go out, then stay out. Push test, or ident and it lights up? Never a flicker during the flight. Besides going straight to the avionics guy is there anything I might try first?

I know this is very basic, but.....

Are you flying where there is radar coverage? The reply light only lights when it is responding to interrogations, or is "identing".
