Tips on route from St Louis to Osh

I have decided to take a longer route to OSH from SoCal this year. The past three years have flown pretty much GPS direct. This year with more time avail. to get there I have been considering flying east to St Louis then n/b to OSH via the Missouri river or Miss. river to see the country along that route. I have never seen that part of the USA down low so I am looking for suggestions on what to see, airports to visit, places to stay.
