Default Tip: Computer image RGB colour matching to paint colour codes

Am trying to work out a good paint colour match for my upholstery and just came across this. Thought it worth sharing....

Given the RGB values of a colour on your computer, e.g. from a photo (easy to find using the 'pipette' then 'Edit Colors' in Microsoft Paint) this will offer up the nearest colour matches in a whole bunch of different paint colour coding systems.

Obviously not 100% guaranteed, but pretty nifty.

Enjoy !

Steve

Very convenient conversion tool... HOWEVER, if your monitor is not calibrated, what you see on your screen may not be close to the actual RGB color. One such tool for monitor and printer calibration is the Spyder.

Agreed. One factor I hope is going to help me is that I do have a known paint colour with colour code. By working out the delta between the monitor RGB and the chart RGB for the known paint that may help me calibrate the monitor RGB for the colour I'm looking to match.

The RGB values in hex of the Federal Std. colors from FS-595 is here -

http://www.fed-std-595.com/FS-595-Paint-Spec.html

It also lists the common names for the colors. These are the colors to copy for military paint schemes.

Default Colors

If you see the exact color "in the wild" somewhere and have an iphone, there are several apps which will give you exact RGB values when you point your camera at it. Appzilla 2 is one that comes to mind (it's kind of a swiss army knife app).

This might help...

http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorch...rcharts_us.htm

and

http://www.alliancecoatings.com/warb...-1940-1949.php

Looks like it is "orange-yellow"

I believe this is one I picked for my sailplane and the DuPont dealer said it is also called 60's GM Schoolbus Yellow - not the modern, much more yellow school bus color...

A good reference here by service year... mostly still orange-yellow -
