Default Mode C or Encoder

My RV7 is 7 yrs old and suddenly my mode C transponder is reporting around 3000ft no matter what altitude I am at (after I landed ATC was kind enough to inform me). I don't know if I have a MicroAir transponder problem or a Ameri-King encoder problem. Has anyone, experienced this kind of failure and determined the cause?

Just to close this out, I rewired the transponder to the Dynon and all is fine. The AmeriKing encoder most likely was the component that stopped working. I was lucky to have the Dynon with unused encoder outputs.

Not unusual at all........

I have had 3 AK350's now over the last 8 years fail in some way. None of this with the Dynon's along the way.
