Just a reminder to be vigilant around Terlingua Ranch...active MTRs along that route - VR-1108 and VR-1109. On good weather days you'll occasionally see T-38s out of Laughlin flying 400kts+ within a few miles south of the airstrip at 500' AGL (on weekdays). Would be an awesome sight to see from the ground!

Seems like a really neat area to explore...I always wanted to venture out there during my time at Laughlin but unfortunately regret never making the time to do so. Maybe someone who has been can post some pics

Default For the cooler months

Come out to Agua Caliente County Park in the Anza-Borrego Desert area east of San Diego. Winter camping here is awesome. Just a bit too hot in the summer!

There are many hundreds of airstrips in the US where you can camp. Here is one online database: http://www.shortfield.com/

The books "Fly Montana", "Fly Idaho", and "Fly Utah", by Galen Hanselman, are also a great resource.

Those of us who enjoy camping with our airplanes might consider supporting the good work being done by the Recreational Aviation Foundation, www.theraf.org

Default Living the dream in a Husky

An acquaintance of mine has taken a 4-month sabbatical from work to fulfill one of those goals that won't go away.

I met him a few years ago when he wanted to look at buying an RV, but he finally settled on a Husky.

You can read and see all about it on his blog, which is an online chronicle of taking a two-week mountain flying course, followed by visiting every back-country airstrip he can find. If I remember correctly, he's targeting Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho.

It's worth a look, and might be a nice addition to this thread:

Very primitive camping, take everything with you.

Default Amanda

Amanda,

Look up the Recreational Aviation Foundation web site.
Get in there and donate! You two will open up a lot of new horizons. For your selves and others.

Default Catalina Island west of L.A.

camped under the wing. Ask the "tower guy" to leave the bathroom open. Buffalo will roam right up to the fence to look you over.
