Sub Panel Recess?

For those who have built instrument panels with a recessed (fore & aft) sub-panel for switches, breakers and engine controls; how much of a recess did you build in?

3/4 inch recess for lower switch panel as I recall.

We also used 3/4" when we built the sub-panel on "Mikey" - I measured the length of the standard toggle switch bats, and that's about what they were.
