Mystery- Need a directional gyro expert

Have a Sigma Tek directional gyro that was acting strange. Pulled it from the aircraft, removed the back from it, along with the housing and found this little thing floating around. It was barely gripped on a small piece of clear double-stick tape (PSA) attached to the side of the housing. I suspect it doesn't belong there, and I question if it belongs inside this thing at all. Thus, the mystery... Does this thing belong in my DG?
