Default DAR inspection and N-numbers

Getting ready to get my sign off but had one question. I still need to paint the aircraft so I wanted temporary n-numbers on the plane for the sign off. Can I use 3 inch or do I have to use 12 inch temporary numbers if I ever want to go out of the country? I figure I can use temporary 3 inch and when I paint it I can use the 12 inch. Is this right? Thanks

3" are legal for under 180 KCAS in cruise. Only need 12" numbers for ADIZ. 3" is fine flying north into Canada.

I buy 12" stick on numbers from Sporty's for $35 a set when I go to the Bahamas then take them off and put them in the trash when I get back.

About 5 bucks at home depot aviation will get you three inch stencils and a can of black spray paint.
