I registered mine about 3/4 way through my QB project. Once you get your major components from Van's, have Barb Billman send you a Bill of Sale. My local FSDO (MKE) sent me a homebuilder package with all the forms and circulars. If your's is not so accommodating, try:

My FSDO also did my AW inspection. They are free!!

The FSDO is doing my AW in a few days. They want 3-6 months notice before you are ready for your AW. They have to look busy ya know

It took OK City only a few weeks to get my registration back, so you don't need 6 months to get it done, but it is the one big thing (other than building a plane) that you need to get done before your AW. By the way the local FSDO here in Detroit is a couple feet from my hanger door and they have been great to deal with. They do seem like one day they might want to pass all the work to DAR's.
