Default RV-4 Canopy

I've got an RV-4 with the standard tilt over canopy and I've removed the canopy to repaint the inside frame. I'm not the builder so I don't know what type of fill material is used on the front right side where the canopy side rail slopes upward (looks like a wedge)? I'd like to remove this & install new before painting. Is it OK to paint this or should I install it after painting? It looks like some kind of hardened foam.
