How long of a 7/16 screw do you use?

long enough to cut threads and tapper the end...

i think that i bough 5" or so... after cutting the threads i chucked the bolt in a drill press and tapered the the bolt end with a vixen file, then smoothed with files and emery cloth.

just make sure that the bolts are straight... lower grade hardware has a lot of variation.
