removing fiberglass resin from the skins

Good Evening Together,

imagine that after you did some fiberglassing, one day later you find some big hardened drops of resin somewhere on the skins. apparently the resin you bought was high quality and it sticks to the aluminum like a solid rivet.

somebody know how to remove that stuff without scratching the skin?

MEK sure will soften it.

Try a single edge razor blade right at the base of the glob. Usually glass drops don't adhere quite as well to unscuffed alum and can be popped off if you get the blade to slide under an edge. Might have to tap it a little bit. Even if it scatches a little, paint cures all at the end of the day.

Big long globs are different :-(

You say "resin"...was it just resin or had you mixed it with hardener?

If it was mixed and has cured, MEK won't touch it.

If it is cured, the best bet is to flex the skin and it should pop right off. If flexing is impractical, carefully slide a single edge razor blade under the edge and pry up.

If this is the external skins and you are going to paint don't worry about scratches. I used a right angle die grinder and a 2" fine sanding pad. If you are careful you can take off only the resin. The heat from the friction makes the last .005 flake off. Scotch bright it smooth.
