Default tow bar

Aircraft spruce has one (Bogi), and it works GREAT. Fits nicely in my RV-4.

The April issue of Sport Aviation had an article on making a towbar from an aluminum crutch. I made one sized for my stock Vans full-swivel tailwheel, but then bought a Doug Bell tailwheel fork and found that it was a little wider and didn't fit anymore. So I gave it to an RV-3 pilot at my local field who still has a stock tailwheel.

It was very light, and when folded was no more than 2' long, 6" wide, and about an inch thick (except for the ends that went over the tailwheel bolts, they were a little wider. If I can catch him at the airport this weekend i'll try to remember to take pictures.

I decided there was a better way to build one for the Bell tailwheel fork, still using an aluminum crutch as the starting point, but I haven't made one yet. Still looking for another $2 used crutch at Value Village from time to time.

I use my old Cessna 150 towbar. My experience is that it works just fine with no slippage. Back in the day, a former co-owner of the little 150 owned a plating shop and chromed the bar just for grins. See post #8 for a pic of the towbar attached to the Bell tailwheel fork on my -8:
