paperwork required to build???

I am torn between buying or trying my hand at building. I have tried searching the threads but can?t find a precise checklist of required paperwork.

I know a maintenance log must be kept, what specifically must be logged?

Are there any other logs that must be kept?

What paperwork do I have to file with the FAA?

What if you buy some parts (wings, tail etc...) from other builders, any special paperwork required?

If I buy completed sections does this jeopardize my ability to claim I?m the builder?

If I buy a flying aircraft I assume I just need a bill of sale and to register the aircraft, am I missing anything?????

As you can tell I?m a novice so sorry if these are elementary questions.

I know a maintenance log must be kept, what specifically must be logged? I assume you're actually referring to the builder's log and nothing specific is required. A general description of your activitiy and lots of pics help to show that you were in fact the builder.

Are there any other logs that must be kept?
None during the build.

What paperwork do I have to file with the FAA?

Nothing for the build itself. You will need to submit the following forms to register your aircraft (copied from EAA):

1. AC Form 8050-1 Aircraft Registration Application
   Not available online. Must request a blank form from your FSDO (Flight Standards District Office).
   To locate your FSDO http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/field_offices/
2. AC Form 8050-2 Aircraft Bill of Sale (Kit built aircraft only)

3. AC Form 8050-88 Affidavit of Ownership for Amateur Built Aircraft

Not really, but you'll want a copy of their builder's log and probably want to contact Van's and let them know you are now the builder

Possibly. This is why you want a copy of their log to show 51% compliance. If you have that then you shouldn't have an issue, at least with obtaining the airworthiness cert. However, depending on how much is already complete my jeopardize you're abilty to get the repairman's cert.

Guys, I think he is asking what paperwork is required to build...and the answer is...NONE. Don't worry about paperwork until you're a few months from completion. You only need paperwork to register the airplane and to be granted an experimental airworthiness certificate.

Jamie is correct. However, during your build, you will want to track your build hours and take pictures of YOURSELF building the plane as proof you are the person who built it.

For my builder's log, I simply used Excel and linked pictures to each task. Simple and easy.

If you buy a project from another builder you will need to transfer the project from the builder to you and send the paperwork to Van's

Ditto the above from Dave. I bought my tail kit from another builder. We typed up and signed a bill of sale. Just call Van's; they will talk you through it and send you the necessary paperwork for that part of it.
