Default LOE -- The New Mexico one

In the land of 100 or more miles between weather observation points you never know what you will get. The briefing this morning looked like there wouldn't be a cloud within hundreds of miles. Well, I wasn't that surprised to find myself above a solid undercast on the way up to the EAA LOE fly-in at Moriarty, NM. The dewpoint at the nearest station was 37 degrees F.

The Capitan Mountains, here, are one of the few US ranges that is oriented east-west.

The undercast gave me a nice opportunity to observe "The Glory"

Just south of Moriarty is the interesting series of lakes called Laguna del Perro. I don't know just how that translates? Dog Lake or Lake of the Dogs or something like that. Maybe a Spanish speaker can tell me.

Usually a Laguna is a transitory lake in a pretty flat area. I had never looked at these closely before and was kind of surprised to see how much relief there is. Then there are dunes between the lake beds.

I don't follow the RV-3s closely so I was stunned to see this airplane. Ya'll probably already know about it.

Some real nice ideas on this one and incredible workmanship.

Forward baggage compartment combined with access to brake cylinders and back of the panel. Clever!

Well, you know! There is no accounting for taste.

Moriarty has more than its share of really clever people. Mark Mocho

And Bob Carlton Bob thinks a tubroprop version of the pure jet engine he is mounting on gliders would be pretty suitable for RVs. He said to feel free to contact him.

I have a real soft spot for Ford Model Ts

Working on a Ranger

My RV buddy Tom Benedict and I flew back towards southeastern New Mexico together.

Tom lives right on the edge of the Roswell, NM class D airspace. As we were flying low over the Roswell Airport I got my first look at a Boeing Dreamliner, sitting on the ramp there. Roswell is also where I first saw a Boeing 747. It is still a vivid memory. I drove up in the 60s for just that purpose when they were doing crew training at Roswell. I was amazed. The very 747 I saw may well be sitting at Roswell today among the many derelict airplanes stored there.

We stopped in at Tom's house for some water. I had a parking incident where I plowed into a cow patty and swung around. Kind of made me think about how solid those things can be.

When I left Tom's place I kind of plotted a slalom course out so as to avoid the biggest of these pattys. Tom has some really healthy cows!

Arguing on the internet is like having a competition to see who can hit a brick wall the hardest. You may win, but you're still an idiot.
