Default Spindle Nut

I would like to hear some other opinions on the proper method for adjusting the spindle nut for wheel bearing preload on my RV-4, if anyone would mind replying...Thanks,
Mr Charles

Done totally by feel, I like to tighten by hand to remove all the play from the bearings, then tighten to line up the cotter key. A little preload is good, to much is bad and no play allowed (wheel should turn easily by hand).
Clear as mud right

I tighten down with a wrench to make sure everything is seated. Then loosen and tighten very snug by hand.
