Lot's of talk about IMC and EFIS and back up instruments. Must be the season. Hey, at least we not talking about high CHT's anymore.

Question: For those using the 500 series Garmins, (probably the 400's also). How realistic is it to count on the GPS derived PFD as a back up to EFIS in IMC?

I wouldn't... The horizon is based on your track... I think that means you can be fully cross-controlled, but if you're still holding a straight track the horizon will say you're wings level. NOT what i'd want from my PFD in an emergency.
