I'd guess that the pilots were not aware of the flight restrictions. Goes to show that you really need to check the NOTAMs. I wonder what the penalties will be.

I hate those roaming POTUS prohibited/restricted airspaces. I wish the Presidents would just stay in DC for their term.

POTUS TFRs
Jonathan, I agree. And the Notams themselves are fairly cryptic.
Wrote about this on my website a few months ago.

it may help some of you guys to register with faasafety.gov, they send out NOTAMs in very clear text for POTUS and VIP movements, that's how I knew of the TFR in chicago, he'll be in new orleans next

Or use Weathermeister...
...to check weather before even a local flight - it give TFRs within a 100 miles.
One is active right now near us (a wild fire) and TFRs can crop up quickly.

Last year I was at a Wing seminar in NJ. NJ is a very small state 60 miles wide by 100 miles long.
The FAA rep. introducing the speaker stated he had 18 TFR violations all in a two day period the weekend before the seminar. A special governors election was occurring in NJ. The politicians were changing their speaking plans last minute and updating the TFR restricts with their movements so rapidly even those who had checked the info just a hour prior were still in violation.
TFR usage is being extremely abused. The size of them. The frequency of their usage. The ability to change them on the fly. And those who can establish them and for what purpose. These issues need to be addressed immediately.

AOPA
AOPA members usually also get POTUS TFR warnings when applicable
for the area the membership address is located.
