Default So, kindly educate me....

....since I have a Fred Flintstone cellphone and no Blackberry or IPhone or any fancy gizmos.

I'd like an inexpensive EFB and this looks good.

I assume that I'd then have to invest in Jeppessen downloads for the IFR approach plates, plus renewals, correct? How much will it all cost on an annual basis?

Thanks,

Default WingX

I spent the big bucks to get WingX on my iPhone. I like it, as it has moving map with airspace, weather radar, Flight Plan filing and a live link into your Duats account to make it all official as a briefing source.

The iPad version is not going to have GPS moving map, as the iPad does not have true GPS. It would have to rely on the WiFi finder to locate any map functions. Everything else should work though.

No exactly correct. The iPad 3G uses an AGPS chip. It does not rely on the data services or WiFi connections to accurately give your location. Wireless connectivity assists when the GPS signal is marginal, but it works fine without it. Now, having said that, I don't know if it's performance is up to being used as a moving map.

In case anyone's interested, the AOPA iPad thread has about as much info as you could possibly want on using the iPad as an EFB--16 pages worth and counting: http://forums.aopa.org/showthread.php?t=62385&page=16

Pierre,
You don't need Jepp. Checkout these 2 links:

Is there a monthly service fee above the $99 software price?

How do they get moving map in the air at 30,000 ft without service? Do they cach the map and still use the GPS? Having the GPS function active on an airliner is illegal. When in airplane mode on an iPhone the GPS function is disabled so to do what they show on the website must require you to have your phone on (not in airplane mode).
