Default SARL Race in Wenatchee WA! GNAR 2010, Jun 12

That is the Great Northwest Air Race...the SARL website information is here: http://www.sportairrace.org/id323.html.

As of right now, there are NO RVs entered. Edit: Bob Mills has stepped to the plate!!

It would be interesting to show them Texicans that Left Coaster RVers know how to put up or shut up.

I am in, but not in an RV.

Default would if I could

I would love to run that race but its just a little too far for me. Where's that guy Randy with the hot RV-3B? I would love to see what that thing can do. I've seen pictures of it's EFIS and claims about how fast it is.... here's a perfect chance to showcase that plane.

Default Thanks guys

Thanks for the exposure. The course link is not accurate as of this exact time, as I just checked it. But I am sure Mike will get it corrected in short order.

It will be a course of about 125nm over the Columbia river and basin area. It will start and end in Wenatchee and cover some pretty scenic country.

We have a great deal of interest and it should prove to be a great weekend with some fast airplanes. June 12 should be a good time of year with some cool air and not too many thermals

We will also have a shorter 70nm course too if you don't quite have your RV ready yet and are still flying something slower. Let's see just how fast a T-craft or Citabria can really go.

Be sure to check the link a little later for the updated course or email me and I will get a copy out to you. boveetim*Yahoo.com

See you at the races, Tim bovee.

But there's a "GNAR-ly" RV entered now!

All right you Rocket-Men and "Best"-Coast RVers...I'm callin' you out!

Just noticed the change to 12 JUN...will be bidding the airline sked around a military exercise early in the month (in Hawaii, yeah, somebody's gotta do it) and my wife's escape to a friend's wedding late in the month, but this date may play well. And with the race being 500-1,000 miles closer that the next nearest races, I've gotta put best effort in to support Tim's inaugural race!

Tim, it sounds like you may have extended the course out into the flatlands to the east a bit...sounds like a great plan and will make it a fun course!

So anyone out west that has been considering SARL racing, this will be a great way to get your feet wet and have a lot of fun. A LOT of fun!!

As the Governator would say (with accent)..."Do it...Do it now!!!"

Cheers,
Bob

Default Rule comment

Rule:

5. The race runs clockwise from start to finish. Entrants will be started according to the Race Speed stated on their entry forms, fastest first. This start order is used to prevent passing. However, if any event occurs so that a racer needs to pass the aircraft in front of them, they must pass on the outside of the course ? this would be the left side of the aircraft being passed. The passing aircraft must maintain visual contact at all times! Remember the FARs state that the aircraft being passed has the right of way.

Comment:

Minor comment - the clockwise course like the one flown at Memphis definitely favors the tandem seating aircraft. Close in at 1,000 ft AGL in an RV-6A it is virtually impossible to see the turn point until you commit to the turn with a 90 degree bank.

MAJOR COMMENT - The pass on the outside has to be tempered with the flight path of the lead plane. If the lead plane is wide of the straight course line the passing plane should not be forced to eliminate itself from competition by slowing down or going even farther off the course line. There should be an allowance for reasonable separation by horizontal distance or altitude. In fact I have never actually seen an overtaking airplane actually pass on the outside in a cross country air race - many times on the inside or above or below. In the Texoma race a couple of years ago the plane I was following into turn 1 did a very shallow banked turn that carried it MILES (really) outside the turn point and it disappeared from site in the distance as I made the turn.

This has happened to me a few times, I caught the RV-Blue aircraft ahead right at a turn. In the Colorado race 2009, I caught the RV-7a right before the second turn and he made a huge arc around the turn. As a race host I complied and remained out side of his turn but there is nothing in the rules about following an airplane that appears lost. If I was competing against another in my class at a race I would probably have turned inside of him. With communication and altitude seperation I think it can be done safely. I would prefer to be lower than the airplane I am passing so that I can keep it in site. That turn really cost me because the roll out was into the upwind leg.

The same thing happened to me at the TVAR II race at turn one.

Default very exciting

I think the GNAR race will be a major turning point for the SARL effort. Once some of those west coast guys get a taste of it I think it will spread. I am hoping the races in the east half of the country take off this year too.

Default Northwest v GoldenWest

I was informed today that the big Golden West Fly-in at Marysville, CA is June 11-13. I do hope that the Northwest SARL event is re-scheduled because that's going to cause a big conflict with divided turn-out.

Default The 12th of June is firm.

The 12th is the day. I selected the day by applying my schedule to the northwest weather and flyin schedule and pretty much had to do it this weekend.

Hopefully the ramp at Marysville will not be too empty with everyone coming to the races

Only kidding there, as we need as many airplanes as we can get at any event, and I will completely understand someone wanting to participate in a great event like the Golden West.

We recently received a video of the Taylor Texas race that is pretty cool if you have about 8 minutes to spare. It should get most any pilot jazzed up.

We sure do not want to loose you Paul, as I was really excited about meeting you and seeing your creation in person. But, as I said, I would understand.
