Default Radio is Nordo airborne

Just did my first flight in an RV-9a that I purchased built. We did an extensive condition inspection and the problem I have is the Garmin 250xl will not transmit or receive when airborne. It tests fine on the ground, engine running or not. When I try to transmit the ammeter pegs out to -40. It doesn't do it on the ground. I think it must be something loose....any ideas?

I had a similar problem. The new antenna wire (ground) was shorted at the connector to the antenna.
