Default How to upgrade GX-50 firmware?

I have a GX-50 GPS in my panel and would like to upgrade the firmware. My current firmware is older and does not have the "NAV" input option available for the serial connections. This means that I can't have it communicate with my SL-30 for "DME"-like functionality. I called Garmin and the only way they will upgrade the firmware is by overhauling the unit....for $400.00! Ouch!

I called some local avionics shops and they basically sounded as if they had no idea what I was talking about.

Anyone ever have the firmware updated on their GX-series units?
