Default Garmin GNS 430 / GMA 340 Problem

I've bought and installed a (used) Garmin GNS 430 connected to a GMA 340 audio panel. (At the same time I also bought and installed an ICOM-A210). While generally happy with the 430, I have two problems I haven't been able to figure out:
  • Output COM volume is very quiet. I have to turn the 430 volume knob to max to make it loud enough to hear. (OTOH, the ICOM radio is plenty loud and clear, even at 40% volume).
  • When I use the 430 COM and key the mic, I get no sound in the headset. The unit does transmit ( TX enabled on screen ) and radio tests indicate that other receivers do "hear" the transmit, but the lack of feedback in my headset is very unnerving. (OTOH, the ICOM radio works as expected).
If somebody has an idea, I'd love to hear it. I've been reading through the user and installation manuals for the 430, and experimenting with anything I can find on the 430, but so far haven't found any magic bullet.
