Default tailweel

Ok, tailwheelers I need some opinions. I'll be fliying out of some old military
practice bases. The maintance stopped some 50 years ago. Here's the question:
With Van's tail wheel there aren't but a couple of inches between the ground and the squared off bracket that supports the wheel. It looks to me that if I drop the wheel off the edge of the concrete or into a hole, the bracket will catch and I will come to a sudden stop, doing some real damage to my baby. Is there an after-market wheel or wheel support that will give me more clearance?
