Default Engine Crating/Shipping

So my hunt for an engine may be over. The problem is that its on the other side of the country. How does one go about inspecting it from across the country? If the inspection goes well then how do you arrange to have the engine shipped? This is all new to me so help would really be appreciated.

The minimum number of planes one should own is one. The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of planes currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of planes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

I would find a local FBO with an A&P/IA and have him (or her) go over and inspect it for you. Have the guy send you pictures of his hands before you contract him to do the inspection, they must be wrinkled and stained black.

Default engine

Give some more specifics about where the engine is. You might get lucky and have a VAFer right there on the field.

I've hauled an O-320 in a rental van and then shipped it this way:

1. place the engine's oil pan on a tire on a shipping pallet
2. build a rigid vertical mount to bolt the crankshaft to (and attach the mount to the pallet).
3. place eyebolts in the lower dynafocal mounts and use ratchet straps to strap the engine down firmly.
4. then build a plywood box around the pallet.

Worked pretty well.
