Default elt - question for canucks

ELT Questions for the fellow canucks out there:

1) am i pretty much obligated to put in a 406 in my new plane now, if I don't want to be faced replacing it in the next few years?

2) has anybody here identified an affordable option that is approved in Canada, and is available "programmed for canada" ?

3) after I buy the unit, is there some process I have to follow to register the unit with the Canadian authorities?

I do believe the people you purchase it from program it. My partner is doing this right know and he needed a real long bunch of numbers that were given to us when we reserved our registration letters. There is a name for these numbers, but I do not recall as he was taking care of this. These numbers are a type of code for information on the aircraft.

A local builder (Kevin Horton) provided me with some valuable links to answer my question, so I'll post them here in case anybody else is looking for this information.

You can find the list of ELTs that are approved in Canada here:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/certification/elt.htm

Note that this list has both 121.5 and 406 MHz ELTs. You can identify
the 406 ones by looking for TSO-C126.

Discount Avionics also has a list of ones they recommend:

http://www.discountavionics.com/elt%20406%20sales.htm

For registering an ELT with the canadian authorities, see:

http://beacons.nss.gc.ca/

Short answer is no, you do not need a 406

Transport Canada Delays 406 MHz ELT requirements
2009-06-04 --

The Honorable John Baird, has decided TCCA should pursue further consultation with the industry on the 406 MHz ELT regulation. TCCA will be forming a new technical committee to review the proposed regulation and alternative technologies to the 406 MHz ELT, and it expects to convene the first meeting of this committee in July

The delay in implementing the new regulation means 406 MHz ELT carriage is not mandatory at this time. However, approved 406 MHz ELTs with 121.5 MHz capability may be installed to comply with the existing regulations for carriage of a 121.5 MHz ELT
