72 mph actually sounds kinda fast for a Piet!

Bob - We missed seeing you at the race this year.

The weather conditions were excellent, except for headwinds all the way around the course. At 2000 feet (the race floor) it was about 10-15 knots headwind going to Freeport, decreasing somewhat after the turn northeast toward the finish line.

Fuel was an issue for the RVs, but a manageable one. At the fuel stops they re-started the timing as the aircraft took off (rather than allowing a fly-by), so making a stop did impose a slight time penalty.

Given the wind, I'm really impressed by the Pietenpol's 72 mph! Also interesting that the turbine-powered Legend was only second fastest overall (not a good day to go high).

An atmo engined Lancair beat the mighty turbine Legend! Think of what a turbocharged Lancair could do. Lee is very impressive at Reno, no surprise he does well here too.

We missed being in the race Alan and your report helps feel the experience in my mind. I saw in the "Start" video that the takeoff was to the south followed by a right turn on course. I didn't see #12 in it but I'm sure your RV-8 leaped off the runway as usual and screamed all the way to Lomira. Congratulations on RV Blue third place. Man I wish they would make those limited or no penalty fuel stop decissions in the beginning and not anounce it at the start line. I spent a lot of time and money developing the 3" tips for my tip tanks because of the anticipated head winds but in the end the major bump in the road of life made it no factor for us. If all works out well for us and Duncan and Carolyn Sutherland maybe teams 71 and 74 will be back in the hunt next year. No tip tanks needed from Mitchell, South Dakota if they start from there again.
